Tuesday Write #11

Glendale school district
The Glendale School District hired a company to spy on their students to find inappropriate behavior. Some students felt that this was an invasion of privacy while others found it comforting to know someone was watching over them. The school justified their cause by saying it prevents cyber bullying,"...It's no different than if they're standing in front of a teacher,' Frydryeh said."
The school had good intentions to start such a program, but some say the program went to far. The spying was intended to stop cyber bullying, but now its moved onto: "...controlled substances, self-harm, disruption of school and class activities,
hazing, sexual harassment..." The list just keeps going. At some point it is intrusion of personal privacy. I feel like the school made an unnecessary decision and many students agree,"But this program is sweeping far afield of what is necessary to ensure students safety and intrudes deeply student's privacy and conduct outside of school,' A student states."
If this type of program were to be implemented at San Ramon I think a lot of students would clean up their acts. For example I saw a student in my grade posting pictures of smoking and drugs. I also saw another student getting cyber bullied by others for expressing himself in a unusual way. This program would definitely change the attitudes of many students online. The question is, would the change be for better or worse?
Cyber bullying is a very important ongoing problem
